OIF Soldier goes 'out of the box' to thank Picatinny contractor

In June the mailman delivered an unusual postcard to the Army's prime supplier of M-25 Stabilized Binoculars.

The "postcard" that was sent to Fraser Volpe Corporation was really a piece of cardboard cut from a Meals-Ready-to-Eat carton that was configured to look like a large postcard.

The MRE postcard read: "Howdy, I am a fire support team chief with a mechanized infantry company currently in Iraq. My job is to work as an artillery forward observer. Your M-25 bino's are working great. We are always on the move and I am able to keep on watch while my track is moving through enemy territory. Thanks." It was signed by Staff Sgt. John G. Bole 3/29 Field Artillery, and it required no postage because it was mailed for free through the postal system as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The M-25 Stabilized Binocular, which was Type Classified Standard by Project Manager Small Arms and the Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center in 1996, weighs four and a half pounds and incorporates 14 power laser harden optics that allow the user to spot a golf ball from a mile away. However, the feature that makes it most valuable to the troops in Iraq is its embedded gyroscope, which allows a stabilized view from moving vehicles a great asset for sighting improvised explosive devices along the sides of roads.

Peter Errante, deputy project manager Crew Served Weapons said it is "gratifying to hear such obvious sincere words of praise from our customer."

He also pointed out that it means a lot to employees of PM-CSW, ARDEC and its contractor team that a deployed Soldier took the time to remind them how closely

ãI thought I would drop you a quick line and say thank you... This equipment did what we expected it would do, it increased our ability to apprehend criminals.
For your information we had a very successful 3 month program. The aircraft personnel were responsible for approximately 180 arrests ...The program was so successful that we are now pursuing a full time Air Support Unit. We are very excited about the potential of this program and will be in touch as our plan unfolds. As I mentioned in previous messages, we have requested funding for the purchase of this equipment and we will likely have approval in early spring.
Again, and behalf of me and the officers who used the equipment, thank you . .ä Sept-06.

ãThe M25 is an excellent piece of equipment. We use it from moving vehicles to scan ahead for IEDs. The Stedi-Eye M25 has allowed us to identify and avoid several roadside bombs during my tour here. I don't know what the army paid for these binoculars, but they are worth itä. Jan 2005 ö Ltc. Anaconda, Balad, Iraq

ãThese binoculars were very durable and were found to be relatively easy to operate·The Fraser-Volpe Gyro-Stabilized Binocular adds a welcomed advantage to the capabilities of the Aero-Scout and gives him a much needed improved sight picture providing more accurate and more in depth target information than possible with typical non-stabilized binoculars or with the naked eye.ä

···äthe M25 Stedi-Eye Gyro-Stabilized binoculars have assisted in assuring a successful mission. Currently we operate 1 MD 500E Helicopter and patrol a city geographic area of over 150 square miles, serving a population of over 350,000, and a metropolitan area with a population of over 1 million. We use our Stedi-Eye binoculars on a daily basis and are extremely satisfied with the product.
···used the binoculars for a little over two years.ä
On one occasion while flying on a joint surveillance mission assisting the DEA and U.S. Marshal Office, we were following a sport utility vehicle, silver in color. Once we spotted the vehicle we climbed to approximately 2,500 feet MSL. We followed the vehicle for several miles through the city, in congested traffic. It seemed like every time the target vehicle got stopped at a traffic light there were several other silver SUVâs at the same location. With the use of the Stedi-Eye binoculars we were able to pick out the target vehicle quite easily and ultimately resulted in a successful arrest for drug charges and felony warrants.
We also routinely use the Stedi-Eye binoculars while assisting on patrol calls. While assisting on the calls we are able to rule out possible matches to the descriptions of the suspect/vehicles put out over the radio with the use of the binoculars. The gyro stabilization ability of the Stedi-Eye allows the user to focus on the image in the binoculars with out any vibration, assisting in being able to see specific details. This can be crucial when relaying information to the ground units responding to the scene.
We are extremely pleased with the Stedi-Eye binoculars and appreciate all of your assistance.
Best regards, Officer Justin L. Jackson, Wichita Police Department Air Section
